Auto Shop & Mechanic Garage Floor Coating
A shop floor does not fail from foot traffic. It fails from four things: hot tires parking on it, oil and brake fluid sitting on it, jack stands and transmission jacks concentrating weight onto a few square inches, and dropped tools. A coating chosen for a living room will not survive any of them.
Hot tire pickup, and why cheap coatings peel
This is the failure every shop owner has seen. A car comes off the road with tires still hot, parks, and the rubber sits against the floor as it cools. Soft or thin coatings plasticize under that contact and bond to the tire harder than they bond to the concrete. When the car pulls out, the coating comes with it in curling patches.
Two things prevent it: film build and chemistry. EF-100 is 100% solids, so nothing evaporates out of the bucket and the whole mix becomes floor. That gives a true 12 to 24 mil build in a single pass, cured to 6,200 psi compressive and 5,500 psi tensile with a Taber abrasion loss of 0.1 g (CS-17, ASTM D4060). A thin one-part hardware store coating is a fraction of that film and has no chance against a hot tire.
The build that holds up in a working bay
Run two layers. The 100% solids epoxy base does the structural work and bonds to the slab. Over it, a polyaspartic wear course takes the daily punishment and protects the color underneath.
EF-290 is a 90 percent solids clear that wears at 0.03 g Taber loss, about a third of the base coat, so the layer you paid to color stays intact. EF-280 covers more ground per kit, roughly 600 square feet from a 3-gallon kit, which makes it the economical wear course when you are coating several bays at once. Both are in the polyaspartic topcoats line.
Oil, coolant, and brake fluid
The point of sealing the slab is that spills stay on top of the floor instead of soaking into the concrete. Bare concrete is porous. Once oil is in it, it is in it, and it stains permanently and interferes with any future coating bond. A sealed 100% solids floor lets you wipe a spill up before it becomes a permanent mark.
Clean spills promptly rather than letting them stand. If your shop handles aggressive chemistry beyond normal automotive fluids, send us the list before you buy, because the right answer may be a different system.
Keeping bays open
Lost bay time usually costs more than the coating. Fast-cure chemistry is how you shorten it. EF-150 shortens the base coat recoat window, and EF-290 recoats in 2 to 4 hours, takes foot traffic in 3 to 6, and carries vehicle traffic in about a day.
Most shops do not close entirely. They rotate: pull the lifts and equipment out of one or two bays, grind and coat, then move down the line. Plan the sequence around your lift anchor points and drains before you start, not after the first pour.
Prep, lifts, and drains
Diamond grind to an open profile near ICRI CSP-2 so the base coat keys into the concrete. Old oil-soaked areas need degreasing before grinding, or the contamination just gets spread around. Cut a clean edge around lift bases and floor drains rather than coating up to them raggedly, since those edges are what people notice.

Sizing the job
One 3-gallon EF-100 kit covers 350 to 400 square feet at a standard build, or 480 to 600 square feet as a primer coat at 8 to 10 mils. Common questions
Will a coated floor be slippery when it gets oily?
A smooth gloss floor with oil on it is slippery, the same as any other sealed surface. Where that is a concern, broadcast flake into the base coat for texture, or ask us about adding grip media to the topcoat. Shops that wash floors down regularly should plan for texture from the start.
Can I coat over an old shop floor coating?
Only if you know what it is and it is still well bonded, and even then it needs mechanical abrasion. Most old shop floors are faster to grind off than to test and gamble on. If patches are already lifting, that coating is telling you the answer.
What about the parts washer and battery area?
Call those out to us specifically. Concentrated chemistry in one corner is a different spec than the rest of the floor, and it is cheaper to plan for it than to repair it.
