A floor grinder and its concrete dust collector work as one machine. Pair a big grinder with a small vacuum and the filter loads, suction falls off halfway through the pass, and you are back to making dust. How to match a HEPA vacuum to your concrete grinder

1. Grinder size

The wider the grinder, the more dust it throws, and the more air the extractor has to move. The DE 35, at about 78 CFM, is for hand tools and small single-head grinders. The DE 120 H (241 CFM) and DE 130 H (224 CFM) are sized for single phase floor grinders in the 17 to 20 in class. The IVC-V3 at 315 CFM is built for small and mid machines. The Lavina pair and the T 8600 are built for large machines, up to the 30 to 32 in class. Put a compact unit behind a 32 in machine and it chokes.

2. Power on site

• 110 to 120 V single phase. Garages, homes, small commercial suites. The IVC-V3 draws 9 A. The DE 35 draws 15 A, the DE 120 H 19 A and the DE 130 H 20 A, so check the circuit rating before you plug in.
• Three phase. Commercial buildings with a power drop. The Lavina V32E runs indoors and in occupied buildings with no engine exhaust.
• Propane. No power on site, or a propane grinder. The IVC-45P, T 8600 and V32GE run off-grid. Propane equipment needs ventilation, so it is not an every-job answer.

3. Filtration and disposal

Look at how the machine sheds the load before it reaches the filter. A cyclone or pre-separator drops the heavy dust first so the fine filter stays clean longer. The Lavina units use four stages: pre-separator, cyclone, conical filter, then H13 HEPA. The DE 120 H and DE 130 H are H-class HEPA extractors, the highest hazardous dust rating, with EN1822 certified filters, and Husqvarna states the DE 120 H complies with the latest H-class standards for dust extractors. The DE 35 uses a HEPA filter certified to MIL-STD 282. Seven of the eight bag into a Longopac or Longopac-style continuous bag, a sleeve you tie off and cut, so there is no dust cloud when you empty it at the dumpster. The DE 35 empties from its 9.2 gal container instead.

4. Silica dust

Grinding concrete makes respirable crystalline silica. OSHA's construction silica standard, 29 CFR 1926.1153, applies to this work. The Husqvarna H-class DE 120 H and DE 130 H are built for dust control under the OSHA silica rule (29 CFR 1926.1153). OSHA does not certify equipment, so read the standard on osha.gov and size the extractor to the grinder before you put a crew on it. On our end, the practical rule is simple: never dry grind without an extractor sized to the machine, and bag the dust instead of dumping a drum. Common questions

Can I use a shop vac for concrete grinding?

Not on a floor grinder. A shop vac has no pre-separator, so the filter packs with fine dust and suction drops. Use a HEPA extractor sized to the grinder.

Do you carry a wet and dry vacuum?

Yes. The Husqvarna DE 35 is a HEPA wet and dry vacuum on 120 V with a 9.2 gal container. It picks up both wet slurry and dry dust, and it is sized for hand tools and small single-head grinders.

What is the difference between a dust collector and a dust extractor?

On a job site the names mean the same machine: a vacuum that pulls dust off the grinder at the source. What matters is airflow, filtration and whether it keeps up with your grinder.

Propane or electric?

Electric where you have the power and people in the building. Propane where there is no power drop and the space is ventilated. The Lavina V32E and V32GE share the same four-stage filter train, so the choice comes down to power and site.

What is a Longopac bag?

A continuous plastic sleeve under the collector. Dust drops into it, you tie it off and cut it, and a new section feeds down. The dust stays sealed instead of going back in the air.
