What an epoxy flooring system is
Epoxy flooring is not a floor covering you roll out, and it is not one bucket. It is a system of layers bonded to the concrete, and each one has a job. Get the order right and the floor lasts. Skip a layer and that is usually where it fails.
- Prep. The slab is diamond ground to open the surface, cracks are filled, and the floor is vacuumed clean.
- Primer or moisture vapor barrier. Goes on bare concrete first. On a damp slab it has to be a moisture vapor barrier, not a regular primer.
- Build coat. The 100% solids epoxy that carries the color and the thickness. This is what most of the kits on this page are.
- Broadcast (optional). Vinyl flake or quartz thrown into the wet build coat for grip and to hide the slab.
- Topcoat. A polyaspartic or polyurethane wear layer that takes the abrasion and the sunlight.
100% solids vs water-based epoxy
Every epoxy resin flooring kit in this collection is 100% solids, so everything you mix becomes floor and nothing evaporates. It builds 10 mils or more per coat. Hardware-store water-based epoxy paint is typically 30 to 50% solids and lays down 2 to 3 mils per coat, because the rest leaves as water. That thin film is why it tends to lift under hot tires. Water-based products still have a place: Premera Easy MVB, a single-component water-based treatment, goes under the system to seal slab moisture.
Epoxy floor coatings by job
Start from the floor, not the product. Residential epoxy flooring, a warehouse slab and a decorative showroom each need a different build. This is how we spec epoxy floor coatings at the counter.
| Job | What goes down | Where to shop |
|---|---|---|
| Residential garage, solid color | EF-100 build coat, clear or a solid color, polyaspartic topcoat | 1-car, 2-car and 3-car garage kits |
| Garage or shop with flake | EF-150 or EF-155 base, flake broadcast, EF-280 topcoat | Flake & Quartz Systems |
| Showroom, retail, decorative | EF-Masterflow or LTX-100 with metallic pigment, clear topcoat | Metallic Systems |
| Warehouse, plant, commercial | Ground slab, moisture test, 100% solids build, wear course sized to traffic | Commercial epoxy flooring |
| Damp or young slab | EF-160 or Premera Easy MVB before anything else | Moisture Vapor Barrier |
| Hot washdown, kitchens | Urethane cement, not standard epoxy | Urethane cement guide |
| Counters and river tables | EF-191 or EF-195 | Countertop & Deep Pour |
If you are torn between epoxy and polyaspartic, you probably need both. Epoxy bonds and builds, polyaspartic wears and holds color in the sun. The full breakdown is in epoxy vs polyaspartic.

Prep and moisture decide how long the floor lasts
The resin is rarely what fails. Epoxy floors peel because the slab was acid etched instead of ground, or because moisture came up through the concrete and pushed the coating off. Grind to an open profile with a planetary grinder and HEPA dust collection. The grinder buying guide covers machine size by job and power on site.
Then check the slab for moisture before you buy a single kit. EF-160 is a 100% solids epoxy barrier rated to 25 lbs per 1,000 sq ft per 24 hours and bonds to concrete cured as little as 14 days. If the floor you already have is blistering or peeling, epoxy floor problems walks through the causes.
How much epoxy flooring you need
Coverage depends on how thick the coat goes on. A 100% solids epoxy covers about 1,604 sq ft per gallon at 1 mil, and floors go on far thicker than that. For a solid-color base coat, one 3-gallon EF-100 kit covers 150 to 200 sq ft, so a 400 to 500 sq ft 2-car garage takes 3 to 4 kits before primer and topcoat. Add 10% for waste on a smooth slab and 15 to 20% on rough or freshly ground concrete. The coverage guide has the full table for metallic, flake and topcoat layers.
Doing a garage? The 1-car, 2-car and 3-car garage epoxy kit pages group the base kits, pigment, flake, topcoat and tools for each size.

Common questions
How long does epoxy flooring take to cure?
It depends on the kit. EF-100 recoats in 18 to 24 hours, takes foot traffic in about a day, vehicles in about 2 days and reaches full cure in about 7 days. EF-155 recoats in 2 to 4 hours, so a full floor can go down in one day.
Is epoxy flooring slippery?
A smooth high-gloss floor can be slick when wet. A flake broadcast breaks up the surface and gives natural grip, and the EF-280 topcoat measures about 0.75 DCOF wet. See the flake flooring guide.
Can epoxy go where it gets direct sun?
Epoxy ambers under UV. In a garage with the door open or near a window, finish with a polyaspartic topcoat like EF-280, which does not yellow.
