Torginol epoxy floor flakes, 1/4 inch vinyl chip

The chip in these boxes is Torginol POLYMER FLAKE, from Torginol of Sheboygan, Wisconsin. It is not craft glitter and it is not a no-name import. Per Torginol's Feb 2025 data sheet, the flake is integrally pigmented, random in shape and sized within a standardized range. It is water-based chemistry with zero VOC, and Torginol rates every color for UV lightfastness.

We stock one size, 1/4 in, the chip most garage, basement and light commercial flake floors use. It comes in eight blends: Basalt, Cabin Fever, Carbon, Domino, Nightfall, Orbit, Outback and Shoreline. Every blend comes in both box sizes. To see them side by side and pick one for your room, use the epoxy flake color chart. The Torginol data sheet is attached on each flake product page.

How many pounds of epoxy flakes you need

Coverage is set by broadcast density, and density changes it by a factor of ten. These rates are Torginol's for 1/4 in flake. Box figures are the same math applied to our two box sizes.

Broadcast Sq ft per lb 25 lb box 40 lb box
Full, to rejection 5 to 7 125 to 175 sq ft 200 to 280 sq ft
Partial (Torginol's heavy rate) 25 to 50 625 to 1,250 sq ft 1,000 to 2,000 sq ft
Light accent scatter 50 to 200 1,250 to 5,000 sq ft 2,000 to 8,000 sq ft

For a full broadcast, divide your square footage by 7 and by 5. That is your pound range, about 0.14 to 0.2 lb per sq ft. A 450 sq ft 2-car garage takes 64 to 90 lb: two 40 lb boxes, plus a 25 lb box if your crew throws heavy. Round up, and buy every box for one floor on the same order. Blend runs are not guaranteed to match between production batches, and a short floor with a second-batch box is the one that shows a line.

Base coat and topcoat quantities are in the epoxy coverage guide.

Full broadcast or partial

A full broadcast means you keep throwing chip into the wet base coat until it will not take any more, then scrape and vacuum the loose chip. You see chip edge to edge, the texture gives the floor grip, and it hides bug holes, patches and a tired slab. A partial broadcast lets the base coat show between the chips, uses a fraction of the flake, and belongs on concrete that already looks decent. The base coat color becomes half the finished floor.

The epoxy flake flooring guide walks through the whole system, the broadcast technique and the jobs where flake is the wrong call.

Base coat and topcoat for garage floor flakes

Flake goes into the base coat while it is wet, so the base coat's recoat time sets your schedule. Torginol recommends a clear topcoat to fully encapsulate the flake and give the floor its wear surface. Budget for it: a broadcast floor takes more topcoat than a smooth one.

Layer Product Why pick it
Base coat EF-155 Recoats in 2 to 4 hr, so base, broadcast and topcoat can go down in one day
Base coat EF-150 Recoats in 6 to 8 hr, applies on substrates down to 32 degrees F
Base coat EF-100 Recoats in 18 to 24 hr, a two-day job. Factory tinted in Clear, White, Beige, Light Grey, Medium Grey and Black
Topcoat EF-280 About 400 sq ft over vinyl flake per 3-gal kit
Topcoat EF-275 About 267 sq ft over vinyl flake per 2-gal kit at 12 mils
Topcoat EF-290 90% solids, a thicker film in fewer coats. About 267 sq ft over flake per 2-gal kit at 12 mils

On a partial broadcast, pick the base color on purpose. Tint a clear base with a Solid Tone pod from epoxy pigments, or use a factory color. The whole system, base, flake and topcoat, is grouped in Flake & Quartz Systems. More base coats are in epoxy kits and more topcoats in polyaspartic topcoats.

Common questions

How many pounds of flakes for a 2-car garage?

At a full broadcast, 64 to 90 lb for a 450 sq ft floor. That is two 40 lb boxes, plus a 25 lb box if you throw heavy. A partial broadcast on the same floor takes one 25 lb box.

Are these real Torginol flakes?

Yes. Every box is Torginol POLYMER FLAKE in 1/4 in, and the coverage figures on this page come straight from Torginol's Feb 2025 data sheet.

Garage floor with flakes or without?

Flakes, if the floor gets worked on. A full broadcast hides tire marks, grit and slab flaws and gives the floor grip with no separate anti-slip additive. A solid color shows every mark. If the floor is a showpiece, look at metallic systems instead.

Do flakes need a topcoat?

Yes. Torginol recommends a clear topcoat to fully encapsulate the flake. The polyaspartic topcoat is the layer you walk on and the one that holds the color.
