Primers

An epoxy primer for concrete soaks into the bare slab and gives the build coat something to grab. We stock two: Premera FP1, a sol-gel that bonds without grinding, and Everflow EF-285, a clear polyurea primer and base coat for ground concrete.

What a concrete primer for epoxy does

A primer is a thin first coat. It wets out porous concrete, ties down the surface and gives the next layer a chemical bond instead of a dusty slab. It does not build thickness and it does not carry color. FP1 goes on at 0.4 to 0.9 mils dry, a fraction of a build coat.

Primer or moisture vapor barrier

A primer is about bond. A moisture vapor barrier is about vapor coming up through the slab, and it is a different product. EF-160, for example, is rated to hold back up to 25 lb per 1,000 sq ft per 24 hours at 18 mils. A regular primer is not rated to stop vapor at all, so on a damp or untested slab the barrier goes down first.

The two work together. The FP1 page calls for Premera Easy MVB first on concrete under 28 days old, and pairs FP1 over Easy MVB when there is a moisture question. EF-285 goes over ground concrete with a moisture barrier. Test the slab, then shop moisture vapor barriers if it needs one.

Pick FP1 when grinding the whole slab is off the table or you are recoating an old floor. Pick EF-285 when the slab is ground anyway and you want a clear, UV-stable primer and base coat. Grinding tips are in the grinder buying guide, and the build coats are on epoxy floor coatings.

Common questions

Do I need a primer under epoxy?

Follow the data sheet for the build coat. Some systems start with a barrier that doubles as the primer: EF-160 is a primer and base coat in one.

Can I really skip grinding with FP1?

On clean, sound concrete, yes. That is what the sol-gel is built for. If the slab is not clean and sound, grind it.

What happens if I miss the FP1 window?

Past 90 minutes, screen the floor and prime again.

How much primer do I need?

At 300 to 400 sq ft per gallon, a 500 sq ft garage takes 2 gallons of FP1. Porous concrete takes two coats, so plan more.
