Choosing a concrete floor grinder by job

Size the machine to the floor, the power on site and the door it has to fit through, in that order. The full method is in our concrete floor grinder buying guide. The short version:

• Garages, basements, small suites, tight access. A 17.7 to 22 inch machine on single phase or propane. See small and mid floor grinders.
• Warehouses, retail buildouts, big commercial slabs. 25 to 36.5 inch, three phase or propane, and remote control once the footage pays for it. See large and industrial floor grinders.
• Edges, corners, stairs. An angle grinder with a diamond cup wheel. We carry the Metabo WEV 15-125 HT (5 in, 120 V) and the Metabo HPT G18ST (7 in, 15 A).

Every planetary floor grinder we carry, side by side

Every number below is from the machine's own product page. All are three-head planetary floor grinders except the HTG-820RC, which runs four heads.

Power: single phase, three phase or propane

Power kills more grinder purchases than budget does. Check what is on site first.

• Single phase. What a house or a small suite has. The Husqvarna PG 450 (220 to 240 V, with a 100 to 120 V option), PG 510 (220 to 240 V, 15 A) and HTG-550 (220 to 240 V) run on it. The Lavina 20 S7 (30 A) and HTG-680 SP (240 V) take single or three phase.
• Three phase only. Lavina 25R S7 and 31R S7, Husqvarna PG 8 S and HTG-820RC. Each comes in a 240 V class and a 480 V class version, so tell us which one your building has.
• Propane. No shore power, no generator, no cord. Lavina 20G S7, 31G S7 and 38G Elite, HTG-550 GP and HTG-800P, Husqvarna PG 6 P and PG 8 P. Built for outdoor and off-grid slabs. Propane needs ventilation, so it is not the machine for a closed home garage.

Dust control and diamond tooling

Grinding concrete puts respirable crystalline silica in the air, so a floor grinder with vacuum extraction matched to its head is the working machine. Each product page names its extractor:

• Husqvarna. DE 120 H or DE 130 H HEPA extractors with the PG 510, the T 8600 propane extractor with the PG 6 P and PG 8 P. See dust extractors.
• Lavina. The V32E electric and V32GE propane extractors cover the 31 and 38 inch machines. See Lavina vacuums.
• HTG. The IVC-V3 HEPA collector with the HTG-550, and the IVC-45P propane collector for off-grid work. See HTG dust collectors.

Tooling decides the result more than the badge does. Husqvarna runs Redi-Lock plates. Lavina runs quick-change plates, and the left-rotating S7 heads take blue PCDs and carbide scrapers. HTG runs magnetic quick-change plates with trapezoid segments. The bond has to match the slab: soft bond for hard concrete, hard bond for soft concrete. Common questions

Do I need a vacuum with a floor grinder?

Yes. Dry grinding without extraction fills the room with silica dust. Size the extractor to the grinder head, or the filter loads and suction drops.

Should I rent or buy a floor grinder?

Why are floor grinders sold by quote?

What replaced the Lavina Elite grinders?

Lavina no longer builds the 20N Elite, 25 Elite, 32 Elite or 32G Elite. The replacements are the 20 S7, 25R S7, 31R S7 and 31G S7. Elite specs stay on those pages for service.
