Buying just the flake? The loose Torginol flake boxes, 25 lb and 40 lb in eight blends, are in Epoxy Flakes & Quartz. See every blend on the flake color chart.
How much flake a floor takes
Broadcast density is the only variable that matters here, and it changes coverage by a factor of ten.
- Full broadcast to rejection, the standard for a finished flake floor: 5 to 7 square feet per pound. A 25 pound box covers 125 to 175 square feet. A 40 pound box covers 200 to 280 square feet.
- Partial broadcast, a lighter decorative scatter: 25 to 50 square feet per pound. The 25 pound box stretches to 625 to 1,250 square feet, the 40 pound box to 1,000 to 2,000.
- Light accent scatter: 50 to 200 square feet per pound.
Work out your square footage before you order. A 2-car garage at 400 to 500 square feet takes two 40 pound boxes at a full broadcast, and a single box at a partial. Running short partway through a broadcast leaves a density line you cannot sand out.
What is in the box
Quarter inch vinyl chip in eight blends: Basalt, Cabin Fever, Carbon, Domino, Nightfall, Orbit, Outback and Shoreline. Pick the blend on the product page.
The base coat decides your schedule
Flake goes into the base coat while it is still wet, so the base coat's recoat window sets the whole day. EF-155 recoats in 2 to 4 hours, which is what makes a one day flake floor possible: base in the morning, broadcast, scrape and vacuum, topcoat in the afternoon. EF-150 recoats in 6 to 8 hours. EF-100 recoats at 18 to 24 hours, which means a two day job. Browse the bases in epoxy kits, and size the base coat itself from film build using the epoxy coverage guide.
The topcoat is not optional on a flake floor
Broadcast chip leaves a rough profile that has to be filled and sealed, and topcoat coverage over flake is meaningfully lower than over a smooth coat because of it. EF-275 covers about 267 square feet per 2-gallon kit over vinyl flake at 12 mils, against about 400 square feet over a smooth coating at 8. EF-280 covers about 400 square feet per 3-gallon kit over flake, against about 600 over a smooth coat. Budget for the difference. See polyaspartic topcoats.
When to choose flake
Choose flake when the floor gets wet, dusty or worked on: a shop, a basement, a gym, a commercial kitchen aisle, a garage where somebody actually turns wrenches. The broadcast texture builds a grip profile with no separate anti-slip additive, and the pattern hides wear that would show on a solid color. Choose metallic instead when the floor is meant to be looked at rather than worked on.
