Arena Silica 16-30

Clean, graded 16-30 mesh silica sand, broadcast into a wet base coat to build the non-slip texture and wear resistance a deck waterproofing system needs.

This is a loose aggregate and nothing more. Washed, dried and screened to a 16-30 mesh gradation, it carries no binder, no resin and no color. Its job is to sit in the base coat while that coat is still wet, lock in as the coat cures, and leave behind a profiled surface that the top coat can wet out and encapsulate. That profile is what gives a finished deck its traction underfoot and its resistance to abrasion.

It is the aggregate step of the PSI Flexideck C-WD deck waterproofing buildout: Enviro-Grip primer, P-Tuff Classic base coat, broadcast aggregate, then Top-Shield 5600EF top coat. In that sequence the base coat goes down at 2.5 gallons per 100 sq ft. Once it begins to slightly gel, thumbprint tacky but still wet, the 16-30 mesh sand is broadcast at 20 pounds per 100 sq ft until the surface refuses to take more. After the base coat is dry, all loose aggregate is carefully removed, preferably by vacuum, before the top coat is pulled.

About the approval. Miami-Dade County, Florida NOA No. 25-0604.15, expires 03/06/2031 (March 6, 2031). That Notice of Acceptance covers the Flexideck C-WD waterproofing assembly. Inside that document the aggregate is listed under products manufactured by others, with the manufacturer shown as Generic and described as 16-30 mesh clean silica sand which imparts the non-slip texture and contributes to wear resistance. The acceptance belongs to the assembly as a whole, not to this bag on its own. Specify it as a component of the approved assembly and build to the NOA and the manufacturer guide spec.

FAQ

How much sand do I need?
Plan on 20 pounds per 100 sq ft for the approved assembly. Broadcasting to refusal always leaves loose material on the surface that gets vacuumed off afterward, so order with some margin rather than exactly to the square footage.

When do I broadcast it?
After the base coat has begun to slightly gel, thumbprint tacky, but while it is still wet. Too early and the sand sinks and disappears. Too late and it will not key in, and it lifts with the vacuum.

What happens to the loose sand?
Once the base coat is dry, remove all of it carefully, preferably by vacuum. Any grain that is not locked into the base coat will end up loose under the top coat.

Is this bag Miami-Dade approved?
No, and it would be wrong to say so. The acceptance under Miami-Dade County, Florida NOA No. 25-0604.15 (expires 03/06/2031) belongs to the Flexideck C-WD assembly, not to the aggregate by itself. The NOA lists the sand generically, with the manufacturer shown as Generic. Use it as a component of that approved assembly.

Why 16-30 mesh specifically?
Because that is the gradation the assembly calls for. Finer sand does not build enough profile to matter. Coarser sand is harder to lock into the base coat and harder for the top coat to wet out and cover.

Can I use play sand or masonry sand instead?
No. The assembly calls for clean silica sand at a 16-30 gradation. Uncontrolled gradation, dust and moisture all interfere with how the grain keys into the base coat.
